THE SCRIBES AND PHARISEES
The Scribes and Pharisees held the knowledge of the law, but were still under
the slavery of sin (John 8:5, 9, 34). They brought a sinful woman to the Lord and,
according to their knowledge, demanded a yes or no answer regarding the way in which the
woman should be treated. They said that Moses commanded that such a person be stoned.
Although the book of John reveals that the Lord Jesus several times was challenged to give
yes or no answers, He always refused to do so. He did not refrain from giving such answers
because He was wise, but because He was concerned with life. The Gospel of John is the
book of life. Life is simply life, not knowledge of yes or no, good or evil. Both yes and
no and good and evil belong to the tree of knowledge. Thus, the Lord did not answer them
in that way. He stooped to write on the ground. Then He answered, "He who is without
sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone." When the Lord spoke this to
them, His word touched their conscience and, beginning with the most experienced ones,
they turned away. Not one of them was without sin. The only person without sin was the
Lord Jesus. Therefore, the Lord's answer pointed to Himself as the tree of life.

바리새인들
서기관들과 바리새인들은 율법의 지식을 가졌지만 여전히 죄의 속박 아래 있었다(요 8 : 5,9,34). 그들은 죄 지은 여자를 주님께 데려와서 이 여자를 어떻게 처리해야 할 것인가에 대해 그들의 지식을 따라 예 아니오의 대답을 요구했다. 그들은 모세가 이런 사람을 돌로 치라고 명령했음을 말했다. 요한복음은 주 예수님이 여러 번 예 아니오의 대답을 요구받았지만 항상 그것을 거절하셨음을 계시한다. 그분은 영리해서 그런 대답을 거절하신 것이 아니라 생명을 관심하시기 때문에 거절하신 것이다. 요한복음은 생명의 책이다. 생명은 다만 생명이며 예 아니오의 지식이 아니고 선 악의 지식도 아니다. 예 아니오나 선 악은 모두 지식나무에 속한 것이다. 그러므로 주님은 그들에게 이런 방법으로 대답하지 않으셨다. 그분은 굽혀서 땅에 쓰셨다. 그런 다음 그분은, 『너희 중에 죄 없는 자가 먼저 돌로 치라』고 말씀하셨다. 주님이 이 말씀을 하실 때 그분의 말씀은 그들의 양심을 만졌으며 가장 경험이 많은 사람으로부터 시작하여 모두 돌아갔다. 그들 중 죄 없는 사람은 아무도 없었다. 죄 없는 유일한 사람은 주 예수님뿐이었다. 그러므로 주님의 대답은 생명나무이신 그분 자신을 가리켰다.
